"What does an OT do in Mental Health?"

I get asked this question a lot when I first meet new clients.

Mostly people are more familiar with occupational therapists working in physical rehabilitation settings or maybe putting rails in bathrooms - but we have a long history of working with people on their mental health and wellbeing too :)

OT Australia describe it this way:

"Occupational therapists working in mental health help people to achieve the everyday activities that people engage in and find meaningful. They draw on a range of psychological and occupational therapy strategies to help people understand and cope with their daily function, productivity and capacity....."

"Occupational therapists in mental health use individual and group programs........ [to] help to develop coping strategies for people overcoming their mental health issues or improving confidence and self esteem in social situations."
